Learning from Mistakes of 2024 and Looking to the Future
As explained in Part 1, there were four major policy areas where the Democrats stumbled —
1. Abortion and Prolife
2. Affirmative Action
3. Economy
4. LGBTQ related issues.
What adjustments in policies and messaging have Democrats made and what additional changes should be made?
1. Abortion and Prolife Policies. The havoc from the Dobbs decision continues but the issue has almost disappeared from public view. That could change as the 2026 elections gets nearer, since the problems caused by the Dobbs decision are still real, even if they are no longer in the spotlight. In any case, the Democratic candidates need to change to a faith-based approach to talking about abortion, emphasizing respect for human life and clarifying that there are limits to abortion rights. The Trump administration’s outrageous raids by masked ICE agents on immigrants and American citizens has resulted in even greater condemnations by religious leaders and widespread concerns by the American public. The actions by the Secretary of War in conducting lethal and illegal military bombings off the coast of Venezuela, highlights the lack of respect for human life by this administration.
All of this means that there is a great opportunity for the Democrats to be recognized as the prolife party and regain the support of faith-based voters — provided the Democratic candidates acknowledge restraints on abortion rights and learn how to talk about ensoulment and abortion from an enlightened faith-based perspective.
2. Affirmative Action. Democratic leaders have yet to realize that affirmative action programs should be based on need and not on race. To understand the reasons for that statement, click here.
DEI. Teams and organizations with diverse viewpoints perform better. Diversity, Equality and Inclusion (DEI) really are admirable objectives when properly pursued, for example, by removing barriers to employment and applying merit-based on the job performance practices but not when engaging in preferential treatment for minorities and discriminating against whites.
Supporting and even expanding need based affirmative action programs while also properly focusing DEI initiatives can significantly help the Democrats win back blue-collar workers and reverse the right ward movement of young men.
3. Economics:
A. Inflation. The success in November of 2025 focusing on Affordability by Democrats in elections for governor in Virginia and New Jersey and for mayor in New York city shows that the Democrats are much more focused on pocketbook issues. Continuing that focus should bring future victories.
However, since the public does not have a high opinion of Democrats, it is important for the party to change that perception in order for the Democrats economic message to be really effective. To do that, the party needs to make changes in policies and messaging on social issues such as abortion/prolife, affirmative action programs, and LGBTQ advocacy.
Voters should be reminded that a major reason for the inflation upsurge during Biden’s administration was Covid-19, which disrupted the nation’s supply chain. President Trump promoted the use of dangerous chemicals (hydroxychlororoquine) and discouraged prudent social behavior, such as masking and safe distancing. Trump mismanaged the government’s response to Covid-19 resulting in the unnecessary deaths of thousands and exacerbating the effect of the nation’s supply chain. By the time Biden left office the inflation rate was at 3 per cent and Covid had been contained.
Tariffs are a tax on Americans and contribute to higher prices for many products, especially those imported items being purchased by middle and lower income Ameri vans. There is a serious lack of competition and increased corporate concentration in the ownership of grocery stores and the meat packing industry, so that corporate profiteering contributed significantly to inflation and higher prices. [Robert Reich has some very hard hitting and factual videos on this subject, such as Bing Videos]. ”. The Democrats need to be willing to take on corporate America, and not be concerned of being socialists. The intervention of Trump in the private sector — like the US government buying stock in private corporations such as Nvidia and interfering in the educational policies of private schools — that is what socialists governments do.
B. Immigration. The Democrats have learned to be much more restrictive regarding immigration. We are a nation of immigrants. They contribute significantly to our economy. The Democrat’s overall approach should be to build high walls and wide gates. as Tom Friedman said in a recent article, while being sensitive to the impact of the influx of immigrants on blue collar communities competing for low-cost housing and jobs. Criminals should be deported but there should be a path toward citizenship for law abiding productive illegal immigrants.
C. Fracking and Energy Policy. The Democrats stumbled badly when it came to fracking. The party should return to the Obama era policy –“all of the above” — while still emphasizing development of clean energy sources. The Dems should be phasing out the need for coal and reducing environmental impact of mining while ensuring that protections are in place for the health of the miners as well as funding for medical treatments of mining related diseases.
4. LGBTQ.
During the 2024 campaign Tim Walz framed support for LBGTQ rights as being in line with the best American tradition of minding your own damn business. Unfortunately, that perspective was not always emphasized by other Democrats. Note: The following text has been obtained by using ChatGPT.
Democrats can support LGBTQ rights while still appealing to mainstream Americans who feel uneasy about LGBTQ issues — but only if they shift how they talk about the topic. The key is reframing LGBTQ rights as fairness, safety, and personal freedom, not as cultural pressure or moral judgment. A 7-step plan is presented here.
Other Issues. In addition to continuing to address the four issues — abortion and prolife; affirmative action programs; economics including inflation, immigration, energy [fracking]; and LGBTQ related social issues — Democrats need to address several others, such as AI, Health Care and Housing, to name just a few.
