Inflation –The Democrats failed to highlight corporate concentrations causing higher prices in the grocery stores and did not tie supply chain disruptions to Trump’s mishandling of the Covid crisis. The primary cause of inflation was Covid-19, which disrupted the nation’s supply chain. President Trump promoted the use of dangerous chemicals (hydroxychloroquine) and discouraged prudent social behavior, such as masking and safe distancing. He mismanaged the government’s response to Covid-19 resulting in the unnecessary deaths of thousands and exacerbating the effect of the nation’s supply chain. The vaccine which had been in development for years by scientist was released for use during the latter part of the anti-science Trump administration. When Biden took office, the nation was averaging 3,000 deaths per day. Biden ramped up distribution of the vaccine and got the pandemic under control. The first financial stimulus legislation –which triggered the inflation — was initiated while Trump was in office. Gas prices and some grain related food prices were impacted by the war in Ukraine, which cut off grain supplies from Ukraine and gas from Russia. Trump’s undercutting of support for Ukraine and his admiration of Putin probably encouraged Russia to invade Ukraine. There is also a serious lack of competition and corporate concentration in the ownership of grocery stores and the meat packing industry, so that corporate greed contributed significantly to inflation and higher prices. [Robert Reich has some very hard hitting and factual videos on this subject, such as Bing Videos]. Possibly the Democrats were reluctant to take on corporate America, lest they be accused of being socialists. The voters wanted to blame someone for higher prices and the Republicans loudly and repeatedly blamed the Democrats. The Democrats, instead of acknowledging voter’s economic pain and placing the blame squarely on the Republicans as well as on corporate greed, tried to duck the issue and pushed the narrative that “our economy was the envy of the world”. That message, although true, was rejected by many voters, resulting in defeat for many Democrats.
Immigration. The Democrats need to be far more sensitive to the concerns of US citizens regarding the influx of immigrants, particularly the impact on the poor or near poor, who have to compete for jobs and low-cost housing. Denmark is an example of a progressive left country that has successively remained in power, while dealing with a surge of immigrants. A recent article in the NY Times by David Leonhardt on February 24, 2025 explains how Denmark’s Social Democrats party implemented more restrictive immigration policies while also implementing a wide range of very progressive social policies. The article ends with recommendations for progressives in the USA. “Trump’s cruel approach to immigration will create an opportunity for Democrats, much as it did during his first term. If they can fashion a moderate approach, and not only in the final months of an election campaign, they will improve their chances of winning back many of the voters they have lost. But doing so will require real change, not merely different marketing. Much of the Brahmin’s left post-election analysis remains tied to the magical idea that working-class voters are simply wrong about mass migration and can be won over with clever narratives rather than substantive policy changes. These working-class voters implicitly recognize an important truth: A restrained approach to immigration is ultimately progressive because it makes possible the kind of society that progressives want. It fosters a sense of community and neighborliness, while prioritizing the values and interests of vulnerable Americans. Recognizing this connection can help the political left emerge from the wilderness where it now finds itself.”
Fracking – The Dems lost in Pennsylvania where fracking was a big issue. Kamala’s response, when questioned about changing from opposition to support of fracking, was widely criticized, even ridiculed. Kamala said that she had changed her position but not her values. She could have said that her previous opposition of several years ago was based on concerns about the release of methane gas. Since then, there has been significant improvements in monitoring and technology to control the release of methane. So now fracking is a better, more environmentally friendlier source of clean energy.
